Most campaign reports are built to look thorough, not to be useful. You don't need to understand every metric on the page — you need to know which five actually tell you whether the campaign is working.
The numbers that matter
1. Cost per lead
Not cost per click. A cheap click that never turns into a form fill, call, or visit is a worse deal than an expensive click that does. Cost per lead tells you what you're actually paying for something that could become a sale.
2. Lead-to-appointment rate
This is where marketing hands off to sales. If leads are coming in but few are turning into scheduled appointments or visits, the problem might not be the campaign — it might be follow-up speed or process on your end. This number tells you where to look.
3. Click-through rate, but only as a trend
A single week's CTR doesn't mean much on its own. What matters is whether it's climbing or falling over time for a given ad or ad set — a falling CTR on creative that used to perform well usually means it's gone stale and needs refreshing.
4. Spend by vehicle segment
Not every model on your lot deserves equal ad budget. This report shows you where money is actually going by segment — sedans, trucks, SUVs — so you can see if spend is aligned with what's actually moving, or what you most need to move.
5. Wasted spend / negative keyword report
This is the closest thing to a leak detector. It shows exactly which searches or placements burned budget without producing anything, so you can cut them going forward instead of repeating the same waste next month.
What you can mostly ignore
- Impressions: a big number that feels good and tells you almost nothing about performance
- Average position / rank metrics: largely obsolete on modern ad platforms
- Engagement metrics on platforms that don't drive leads for you: likes and shares are fine, but they're not the job
A five-minute weekly habit
You don't need to read a full report every week. Glance at cost per lead and lead-to-appointment rate first — if both are holding steady or improving, the campaign is doing its job and you can move on. If either one moves the wrong direction two weeks in a row, that's your signal to dig into the fuller report and find out why.
